Swiss Chard is a delicious, nutritious vegetable, but nobody likes the flavor of Swiss Chard that has gone bad. To keep your Swiss Chard fresh, follow these simple steps.
Contents
Choose Wisely:
- Look for fresh, green Swiss Chard with no wilting or yellowing leaves.
- Avoid Swiss Chard stalks that are slimy or have black spots.
On Buying Day:
- Choose organically grown Swiss Chard if possible.
- If you have to purchase from a conventional grocery store, select Swiss Chard that is already pre-packaged inside a plastic bag or one that is very tightly wrapped with plastic wrap.
- If you prefer to buy it loose, it is best to shop at a farmers market or an organic grocery store.
Storing Your Swiss Chard:
- Once you get home, rinse off any dirt with cold water and dry the Swiss Chard thoroughly with a kitchen towel.
- If you purchased pre-packaged Swiss Chard, place it in an airtight container or resealable bag and store it in the refrigerator for up to seven days. As a bonus, you can add a dry paper towel to the top of the package to keep the Swiss Chard extra-fresh!
- If you purchased loose Swiss Chard, wrap it in a damp paper towel and place it in a resealable bag in the refrigerator. To keep it fresh for longer, add a few sprigs of parsley to the bag, which will help absorb the moisture and keep the Swiss Chard fresh for up to ten days.
Alternatives to Refrigeration:
If you’re feeling extra-adventurous and don’t want to refrigerate your Swiss Chard, you can freeze it! Simply wash the Swiss Chard, chop it into pieces, and store it in a freezer-safe resealable bag or container. It can last for up to six months in the freezer (not that you’d be able to resist eating it for that long!)
Tip: For ultimate freshness, you can even blanch the Swiss Chard before freezing!
Whether you plan on enjoying it within the week or freezing it for later, it’s important to choose the right Swiss Chard and store it correctly to ensure freshness. With a little bit of know-how, you can savor every bite of your Swiss Chard for months to come!
