What Is Swiss German?
Swiss German is a distinct variety of German spoken by the majority of the Swiss population. It has its own accent, pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar which have been developed over the centuries, and which differs substantially from High German and other German dialects. Swiss German is the dominant language in most parts of the German-speaking part of Switzerland, and one of the four official languages in the country (the others being German, French and Italian).
Swiss German is a collection of dialects, which vary from region to region and even from village to village. The dialects cross linguistic and political borders, so two people from different parts of Switzerland may not be able to understand each other. However, there is a widely-recognized standard, spoken by radio and TV presenters, which is widely understood across the German-speaking parts of Switzerland.
Beyond the boundaries of the German-speaking part of Switzerland, Swiss German is also spoken in parts of South Tyrol in Italy, and in Liechtenstein. It is used by some diaspora communities, and it is growing in popularity among non-native speakers, too.
Ways of Writing Swiss German
Swiss German is often written using the Swiss variants of the German alphabet, such as the eszett (ß) or the letter u with an umlaut (ü). Swiss German can also be written using standard German spelling, and when it is written, it can be represent any dialect – not just the standard.
