The Swiss Guard is the official guard force of the Swiss Confederation and has two primary duties – the protection and service of the Pope and the service and protection of diplomatic properties abroad. It is a volunteer guard service where the members are recruited from all areas of the Swiss Confederation and even beyond. All members must be males aged between 19 and 30, between 5’6” and 6′, and must be of working age. All members receive training and weapons training prior to joining, and attend the Swiss Guard Academy for nine months prior to their appointment.
