Ah, Swiss Chard – what a veggie! It’s so delicious and nutritious, but did you know there are certain plants and veggies you should avoid planting it with? Knowing these plants and veggies can help you avoid major chard-plosion. Here’s what not to plant with Swiss Chard!
Beans
Beans and Swiss Chard – not the best of friends. Beans are a legume and fix nitrogen in the soil, which can mess with the PH levels and make it more acidic, thereby curbing the growth of Swiss Chard.
Cucumbers
Cucumbers and Swiss Chard typically don’t get along very well. They like the same kind of water and the soil quality, so in the competition of water and nutrients, the Swiss Chard wins. Plus, cucumbers prefer full sun whereas Swiss Chard can take a little shade here and there. So, it’s best to not plant cucumbers with Swiss Chard.
Beets
Beets and Swiss Chard should never be planted together. They are both root veggies and will compete for nutrients and the same space in the soil. This means one will outcompete the other in terms of growth.
Spinach
Although they are both in the same family, spinach and Swiss Chard should never be grown together. The two vegetables share the same soil-borne disease, and if they are grown together, then the disease will spread and ultimately destroy both the plants.
Mustard Greens
Mustard greens and Swiss Chard do not mix. Mustard green is a fast-growing plant and tends to spread, taking up all the space available for Swiss Chard and literally crowding it out.
So, when you’re planting your Swiss Chard, take care to avoid planting with any of these vegetables. Planting other types of vegetables is actually beneficial, so get creative and make sure your Swiss Chard enjoys a healthy, awesome home. Happy planting!
