Swiss History Meets Catholicism
The Swiss guard has been protecting the Pope for over 500 years. It all began in the 16th century when a Swiss soldier (and quite the dashing fellow) named Kaspar Röist, of the canton of Schwyz, offered his services to Pope Julius II in 1506. It was then that the traditional Swiss uniforms were first worn by the Pontiff’s protection force.
Protecting the Pope from More Than Physical Danger
The Swiss guard’s primary duty is to make sure that the Pope does not come under physical harm, and that his person and his residence is managed with the highest level of security. But they also protect him in the spiritual and moral sense as well. As members of the Catholic Church, the Swiss guard’s dedication to the Laws and Doctrine of the Church is a priority.
The Swiss Guard is Elite
Members of the Swiss Guard must be unmarried Catholic Swiss men between the ages of 19 and 30. They must also know Latin, as all instructions from the Captain of the Swiss Guard are given in Latin. Lastly they must be strong and experienced soldiers. In the words of Pope Paul V, “We are not cannon fodder, we are Swiss.”
Style and Substance
Apart from having top notch qualifications, the Swiss guard is known for its iconic style. From the Renaissance-era pantaloons and doublets to the bright colors and plumed helmets, it’s no wonder why the Swiss guards have come to be as recognizable a part of the Vatican as the Pope himself. Full of old world style, the uniforms speak to the tradition of the Swiss Guard while maintaining the highest of standards in regards to security and defense.
At the end of the day, the Swiss guard is a symbol of strength, loyalty, and commitment. The world looks to them as trusted protectors of the Pope and for good reason: they bring a wealth of experience, honor, and distinction to the Papal Court. Sure, they look good; and who doesn’t love a great looking uniform? But the Swiss guard is more than just style; it is substance.
No doubt one of the Pope’s most dedicated guardians, the Swiss guard will continue to remain as one of the most revered military forces in the world. The commitment they have to their duty results in the Pope, and the Catholic Church, having the most well-trained and steadfast soldiers in their service.
So why do the Swiss guard the Pope? Because they’re Swiss, of course! The men and women of the Swiss guard are a testament to the Swiss reputation of excellence, commitment, and strength. It is for these reasons that their presence is needed and deeply respected in Vatican City.
