A History Lesson
Before Swiss Guards
The Swiss Guards didn’t always protect Vatican City and the Pope. Before 1506, the papal states were protected by excommunicated mercenaries. However, Pope Julius II decided he wanted to enhance the security of the papal states and find more loyal protectors.
Swiss Guards Hired
The Pope sought protection from religious and loyal citizens. Shortly after the French army defeated Italy, he hired “Swiss landsknecht”, citizen-soldiers of Switzerland’s cantons. They were expected to provide the Pope’s protection against potential anti-clerical invasions. This loyal and dedicated force has protected the papacy ever since.
A Proven Track Record
One of the defining moments of their valor is the massacre of the Swiss Guards in 1792. During the French Revolution, the Swiss Guards fought bravely and were slaughtered in order to give the Papal staff time to escape Rome. Despite their sacrifice and loss of life, 5 souls survived the massacre. Even today, the modern Swiss Guard still honors their fallen comrades.
Duties of the Swiss Guard
Today, the Swiss Guards remain loyal protectors of the Pope, the papal palace and their treasures. As members of the Pontifical Swiss Guard, they are sworn protectors of the sovereignty and security of the Vatican City State. This includes the Sistine Chapel, the Apostolic Palace, and other buildings used in the Pope’s daily spiritual and physical activities. When you see a Swiss guard in beautiful ceremonial dress, they’re actually on duty! They’re present during masses, official ceremonies, papal audiences, and diplomatic events.
The Swiss Guards’ long and extraordinary history as protectors of the Pope means that they’re trusted and proven guardians of the papal states’ security and historical treasures. This is why the Vatican has the Swiss Guards, and why they will continue to serve as a loyal and unimaginable force for centuries to come!
So the next time you see a Swiss Guard with their ceremonial gear in the Vatican, you’ll know why they’re there—to protect, honor, and serve the Pope and the Vatican.
