Contents
Ingredients for Swiss Steak
- 1-2 lbs of beef or veal steak (I prefer beef)
- 1 tablespoon of olive oil
- Salt and ground black pepper
- 1 diced onion
- 2 cloves of garlic, chopped
- 2 tablespoons of tomato paste
- 1 cup of beef broth
- ½ teaspoon of dried oregano
- 2 tablespoons of chopped fresh parsley, for garnish
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Steak
Start by seasoning the steak on both sides with salt and pepper. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium high heat. When the oil is heated, add the steak and cook for just a few minutes on each side to brown and cook through. When in doubt, always use a thermometer, the internal temperature should reach about 155-165°F (70-75°C).
Step 2: Caramelize the Onion
Remove the steak from the skillet and set aside. Add the diced onion to the same skillet and cook until translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the chopped garlic and tomato paste and cook for a few more minutes or until garlic is fragrant.
Step 3: Add the Broth
Add the beef broth to the skillet and stir to combine everything. Add the steak back to the skillet and sprinkle with oregano. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 40 minutes.
Step 4: Serve
Once the meat is cooked through (use a thermometer to check the internal temperature, it should be 155-165°F (70-75°C)), remove the steak from the skillet, garnish with chopped parsley, and serve. Enjoy this delicious (yet easy) Swiss steak! Don’t forget the cheese!
